Description:

Makes a valuable contribution towards the continued success of the Corporate Investments Department by supporting the Investment Credit Risk team. Will have the unique opportunity to gain immediate exposure to the fixed income portfolio management function as well as direct interaction with the UNFCU’s Chief Investment Officer and department management. This position is an exceptional platform to further develop investment and credit analysis skills that are valuable to a career in investment management.

Fully participates in the surveillance and pre-purchase analysis process of municipal investment securities, as well as other fixed-income sectors and asset classes. Responsibilities include preparing credit reviews independently and alongside team members, in addition to conducting financial statement and economic analysis, and other special projects.

Accountabilities:

• Fully participate in the process of evaluating the creditworthiness of existing and potential credits across multiple sectors within the public finance space – including general obligation and revenue-backed municipal bond issuers (e.g. Public Power, Airports, Ports, Toll Roads, Water and Sewer).
• Construct and maintain financial/earnings spreadsheet templates of municipal credits, including updating key financial ratios and metrics, while also researching and reviewing key socioeconomic data at the local, state, and national levels.
• Conduct credit surveillance, including monitoring financial filings and news updates of investment exposures, while ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of compiling financial and economic data.
• Undertake the responsibility for building a strong understanding of the credit union’s investment securities exposures and credit risk profile, while expanding on one’s command of financial statement and ratio analysis and to regularly follow current macroeconomic and capital markets conditions.
• Frequently discuss investment credit and economic concepts with members of the Corporate Investments team and contribute to the overall improvement of the credit review process and methodology.
• Become the primary analyst performing credit reviews of critical vendors across the entire credit union.
• Regularly interact with investment team members, including the investment accounting department, in addition to outside vendors, credit rating agencies, research analysts, and broker-dealers.
• Perform various special research projects for departmental managers as requested.

Qualifications:

TYPE & AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Economics and a minimum of 1-3 years relevant work experience in investment and credit analyses, and financial statement analysis within the municipal and/or public finance sector
• Experience and familiarity with interpreting financial statements, including CAFRs
• Knowledge of municipal government fund accounting and GAAP with prior credit risk and investment analysis experience
• Experience in banking and/or other corporate investment sectors is a plus

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
• Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products, particularly MS Excel
• Ability to interpret and communicate (verbally and written) complex data and financial accounting

• Ability to multi-task concurrent projects and manage priorities – including the ability to quickly transition as priorities change to meet demands
• Ability to display initiative and work independently
